The National Curriculum is the educational framework created by the government which specifies what subjects should be taught during each key stage of a child's education. The National Curriculum states that there are three core subjects:

Key Stages in the National Curriculum

Foundation Stage - teaching for children aged 3 to 5
The Foundation Stage is your child's introduction to the National Curriculum. Focusing on children aged 3 to 5, the Foundation Stage begins during your child's time at nursery, and follows them through to the end of their Reception year. This is recognised as a distinct stage of learning, when children learn best through active play which builds on their individual needs and interests.

Key Stage 1 - teaching for children aged 5 to 7
Key Stage 1 in the National Curriculum focuses on children aged 5 to 7, starting at the beginning of Year 1 and finishes at the end of Year 2. At KS1 the Primary National Strategy plays a key role in delivering improvements in standards. The main focus of the strategy is on raising literacy and numeracy skills among primary school children.

By the end of KS1, most children will have reached level 2. Children's attainment levels are assessed through KS1 National Tests (SATs).


Key Stage 2 - teaching for children aged 7 to 11
Key Stage 2 in the National Curriculum focuses on children aged 7 to 11, starting at the beginning of Year 3 and finishes at the end of Year 6. The Primary National Strategy continues into KS2. Teachers also use approaches to raise standards across the whole curriculum, particularly in Science and ICT. Languages are also being promoted by Teaching staff.

By the end of KS2, most children will be at level 4. Children's attainment levels are assessed through KS2 National Tests (SATs).


Key Stage 3 - teaching for children aged 11 to 14 New changes for 2009.
Focusing on children aged 11 to 14, this key stage sees your child making the all important transition from Primary to Secondary school. KS3 covers 3 years of childrens compulsory education. Children are assessed so that teachers can learn more about their progress in Maths, English and Science. In Year 9 children make choices about which subjects they will study at GCSE.

The most substantial change has been the abolition of KS3 Sat's. Schools are no longer required to set National Tests at the end of Year 9 for external marking, they are however required to assess pupils'attainment levels. The second change to take place this year is the introduction of the new National Curriculum. Schools have started to teach the new Framework with Year 7 students.

GCSE: Ages 14-16 (Years 10 & 11)
KS4 completes compulsory education for all students. Your child will study a mix of compulsory and optional subjects.

Your child will then choose four optional subjects from the Arts, Design & Technology, Humanities and Modern Foreign Languages subjects.

AS & A2: Ages 16+
Your child may choose to stay in education and take A Levels. They may stay on at school if they are in an institution that continues onto age 18, or choose to go to a 6th Form College to study for their A Levels.

Your child will choose five subjects to study for one year. At the end of the year they take AS exams. At this point they may choose to leave school/college, or they may decide to complete A2 courses in three of the five subjects to complete a full A Level.

KEY STAGE 1

SATS take place in year 2 (at the end of infants) throughout May. Each child is teacher assessed in Reading, Writing (including spelling and handwriting), Maths (including number, shape, space and measurement) and science. Your child's class teacher will set short exercises in English and Maths to determine what level of ability your child is considered to be.

KEY STAGE 2
SATS take place in the second week in May and are far more formal than Key Stage 1. This can be more stressful for children. The tests which are taken in Year 6 cover the three core subjects of English, Maths, and Science. Very bright children can be assessed by teachers to see if they can go onto higher levels. The papers are sent away to be marked, with results being available before your child leaves primary school in July.

The word "Dyslexia" comes from the Greek and means 'difficulty with words'. It may also be defined as having a reading IQ below a learning IQ.

Dyslexia affects approximately 1 in 10 pupils in the UK

Dyslexia can have a number of causes but it tends to run in families

It generally affects boys to a greater severity than girls

Dyslexia is found in people of all ability levels

According to government figures, 17% of 11 year olds in the UK fail to reach the required standards in reading tests and has recommended that methods such as "synthetic phonics", breaking the word down into sounds, need to be adopted.

Dyslexia is a processing problem with language. This can affect different kinds of language such as reading, writing, maths , music, speech etc.

Being dyslexic does not need to be a handicap to anyone.

Dyspraxia affects the planning of what to do and how to do it. It is associated with problems of perception, language and thought. Dyspraxia is an impairment of the organisation of movement, in that the brain does not properly process information. This results in messages not being properly or fully transmitted to the rest of the body.

Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficultythat hinders the learning of mathematics. It may occur as a single specific learning difficulty for a child or it may co-occur with other specfic learning difficulties, the most likely of which are dyslexia and dyspraxia.
