Noble 'Posture' Game Ball Repeated studies have shown a significant increase in recurrent back pain in children.
23% of this group of children have needed to visit their doctor.
30% of this group of children have been unable to follow physical activities.
26% of this group of children have been absent from school. (Gardner and Kelly 2005)
MRI studies found damaged discs in children as young as 15 years old. (Salminen et al 1999).
With the prevalence of back pain in this age group as high as that of adults.
People reporting back pain as a child are more likely to experience back problems as an adult (Croft et al, 2001; Harreby et al 1999)
Activities involving prolonged trunk flexion increase the risk of back pain. Studies indicate that the lumbar lordosis must be preserved while sitting and there is a strong association between back pain and sitting posture. (Candy et al 2004; Linton et al 1994; Salminen et al 1992; Corlett and Gregg 1994; Mandal AC 1985)
Reports published by Back Care (the charity for healthier backs), conclude that sustained poor posture is
probably the key environmental determinant of back pain in children and adolescents.
A SOLUTION
Strengthening trunk muscles through core stability exercise and maintaining the lumbar lordosis while sitting have long been recognised as practical steps in preventing and treating back pain. Gameballs are a simple way of achieving improved sitting postures while reducing prolonged trunk flexion, a recognized cause of back pain and spinal disc degeneration.
